Library - Giant Book 1

Library

Our Library is indeed a discovery centre and forms an integral part of Sweet Valley. It is a vibrant, colourful, busy and exciting place. It is fully computerised and is well stocked with more than 10 000 wonderful books including CD's, DVD's and other resources.

The library stock is aimed at primary school level and we keep up to date with the latest in fiction and non-fiction. This is suitable for both girls and boys. It is a friendly and inviting place where the learners love spending time selecting and taking out books.

The Grade 1's visit the library once a week for story-telling time. The children from Grade 2 - 7 visit as a class each week to select books. Literacy and information skills are taught to Grade 3 to Grade 6 classes during their library lessons. The library is open after school for book exchange and research. In this technological age, we consider reading very important and therefore have incorporated the library lessons into the timetable to encourage the children to read as much as possible and to instil a love for reading.

Every term we enter a team into the inter-school literature quiz as well as a team in the exciting Kids Literature Quiz which is hosted each year by Wayne Mills from New Zealand.

We have run many very successful and exciting Readathons at the school. In 2012 we look forward to our 'Book Feast" to give extra time to celebrate reading with visits from authors, competitions, visiting drama groups who encourage reading, coffee and reading mornings, twilight tales, a themed decorated library and loads of prizes. The purpose of this event is to inspire the children to read as much as possible and to develop a life long love of reading.

Our Library is run by Mrs Roslin Senogles. We also have a team of Grade 7 monitors who help in the library. Parents are very welcome to visit our school library after school together with their child/children or to chat to our librarian for any book-related advice.
